The world famous Godolphin racehorses have a new home in Newmarket, UK

Turrets by Smith of Derby for Godolphin Racing Stables

The world famous Godolphin racehorses have a new home in Newmarket, UK. The skyline of the 110 stable buildings at Moulton Paddocks is characterised by traditional roof turrets and a clocktower, all engineered and installed by Smith of Derby. “This project demonstrates perfectly our expertise in blending the old and the new – traditional designs realised using contemporary materials” says Jim Foster, Sales Manager of Smiths.

The brief from architects Keith Warth & Associates was for a set of 8 individual units with copper roofs, white finished timber bodies and lead cloaking to the ridge boxes. With their experience in replicating such materials in GRP, Smith of Derby provided a solution which maintained the exact appearance, colour and texture of the traditional designs utilising GRP as the main structural material. The benefits of this technique are low maintenance cost, relatively light weight and straightforward modular installation, as well as guaranteeing final installation within a tight lead time and within budget.

The main body of each turret is in GRP with a set of four louvre panels. These are formed of aluminium, finished in white 2-pack low-bake acrylic to motor industry specification. The copper effect roofs have a metal-rich gel coat, treated to give an authentic verdigris finish, and are topped by identically treated copper effect finials. Base units for each turret are of conventional timber construction by the site contractors. For these, Smith of Derby provided lead effect GRP four sided aprons complete with simulated welted joins.
The louvre panels in four of the turrets provide ventilation and are equipped with rear mounted insect screens. The matching louvres in the remaining turrets have rear panels in transparent polycarbonate, thus providing daylight for the interior space below. The central clock tower has four 915mm diameter roman dials, also formed of GRP, but finished in traditional 23 ½ carat gold leaf. Timekeeping is controlled by an Auto-restart unit which provides automatic correction for power failures and summer/winter time change.

The £20m development is on schedule for completion by the end of March 2006, ready for the arrival from Dubai of the almost priceless occupants in time for the flat season.
