Toshiba’s smaller cabinet, single-phase VRF system bridges capacity gap

Milan, February 28, 2005 - Toshiba launched its latest innovative R410A product line in Europe on March 1st at its stand in Italy’s Mostra Convegno Expocomfort trade exhibition. It is a range of smaller capacity, smaller cabinet VRF systems operating from a single-phase power supply, bridging the gap between Multi-Split systems and large-scale VRF. It is expected to be available in the UK from late May or early June.

Designated the Mini-SMMS, to demonstrate its total compatibility with Toshiba’s larger VRF product ranges and utilisation of the same twin rotary compressor technology and inverter drives, the new product has been designed specifically for small commercial and most residential applications.

It will provide the same exceptional inverter-driven efficiency and installation flexibility as Toshiba’s SMMS and SHRM systems but adds an innovative option that will make it ideal for home and hotel applications. The system’s Pulsed Modulating Valves (PMVs) can be remotely sited away from the respective indoor units removing any refrigerant noise from the occupied space.

Mini-SMMS is a heat pump system available in three sizes, 4, 5, and 6 HP and has EER/COPs of 4.29/4.61, 4.03/4.00, and 3.35/3.71 respectively. The systems deliver capacities of 12 to16 kW in cooling mode and 12 to 18 kW in heating mode. The systems will all qualify under the government’s Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme.

They are compatible with the same sophisticated range of TCC-Link control options as our Digital Inverter split systems and our R410A VRF systems. This control enables individual air conditioning of multiple room and simplifies installation through automatic addressing.

The twin-fanned outdoor unit is housed in a similar cabinet to that used by Toshiba Split systems. It weighs only 117 kg, and measures a mere 1.34 metres high, 0.32 metres deep and 0.90 metres wide – so will fit in a lift, avoiding the need for craning in many situations. It is 70% smaller than the existing 5 HP VRF unit overall, and has a 60% smaller footprint. Installation does not require a concrete plinth. The three models of outdoor unit can operate with 6, 8, and 9 indoor units respectively.

The indoor units that have been designed for this system offer a great deal of installation flexibility. Currently the range comprises 13 types: the existing 11 indoor units available for Toshiba SMMS and SHRM and two new products a 600 x 600 mm four-way cassette in six sizes and a one-way cassette in three sizes. At 79 different models this is the largest range of indoor units types available in the market for any VRF type technology. An additional range of indoor units will also be introduced specifically for residential applications.

As an added installation advantage, the total possible piping extension is up to an extremely useful 180 metres. Simple piping and wiring also cuts installation time and complexity – the unique Toshiba total flexibility in applying headers before or after joints applies to the whole range.
