Hotel refurbishment sets seaside pace with quality air conditioning from Toshiba

The refurbishment of Dunkerley’s, a popular, long-established hotel and restaurant on the south-east coast, in the ‘Victorian’ character resort of Deal in Kent, has included Toshiba’s R410A Digital Inverter Split system air conditioning, supplied by the Swanley branch of HRP Ltd – wholesale distributors for Toshiba and Carrier ranges.

The requirement for air conditioning six rooms came as part of its programme to update its suites of luxury rooms . As the building is Grade II listed this posed a number of installation challenges for local contractor A1 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. But the success of the work certainly proves that older and historically significant buildings are not beyond air conditioning, which is increasingly required to meet rising expectations of comfort from today’s guests and to comply with new legislation. The building is, famously, sited on an exposed corner that faces the sun for much of the day and catches the wind in winter. Traffic noise precludes the opening of windows. So heat pump air conditioning is a definite bonus, and it’s a great selling point for the hotel.

The use of gravity drainage for the condensate pumps was regarded as vital by the installer to reduce noise levels even further. This was considered to be a priority as the hotel is on the seafront and the last thing guests want at night is mechanical noise when they have come for the relaxing sound of the sea.

The hotel staff has remarked that the air conditioning pipe work is all so nicely boxed in that you don’t realise there’s anything there. Applying the latest fire regulations meant that the installers had extra work to do - elements of the installation have two layers of plasterboard, ceilings that have been re-coved, and fire-proof foam has been used where appropriate. However, the ability of the Toshiba units to operate with long pipe-runs gave the installers a great deal of flexibility in terms of installation, since locations for the outdoor units were limited.

Of course, the hotel wanted to minimise the loss of room occupancy time and so the installer had to complete the job with the minimum of fuss and disruption and in record time. The work was done with residents still in the hotel and was completed within a week.
