Sureset set the standard for Resin Bound surfacing at new Uxbridge Athletics Stadium

The recently completed London Borough of Hillingdon Athletics Stadium at Uxbridge is the first phase in a redevelopment programme for their Hill House Farm site and will become the borough’s centre of excellence for athletics.

Environmental planning specialists, Gillespies, carried out the initial Environmental Impact Assessments as the development is on Green belt land and were also responsible for landscape treatments in conjunction with main contractor Fitzpatrick and architects, Faulkner Browns. The track and field facilities conform precisely to UK Athletics recommendations but Gillespies were well aware of the need to enhance areas surrounding the track to provide both a visually attractive facility and some blending of tones between the main arena and the adjacent ‘green’ areas. An easy option would have been the use of traditional asphalt but the Gillespies management team had utilised SureSet resin bound surfacing for other projects in the past and felt the system’s versatility and durability, along with its higher quality finish would be more appropriate for use here. From the many hundreds of SureSet formulations colour palettes were prepared for assessment with a 3mm Pearl finish being specified for the track surrounds and adjacent areas. Outside of the track 3mm Pearl has also been used for the cycle parking area and Tree Pits have been constructed from porous 8mm Rounded White. Some 1435 square metres of 3mm Pearl have been laid in total with 18 square metres of Rounded White for the Tree Pits. Sureset’s installation team completed the total project in just 7 days.

Both Gillespies and Fitzpatrick’s Project Manager, David Hazle, have expressed themselves well satisfied with the end result.

The £3.6million pound facility will eventually incorporate a new indoor swimming and leisure complex and upgrading of the site’s existing open air Lido. Here Gillespies have also specified SureSet’s 3mm Pearl for a semi-circular area surrounding the proposed sun terraces, providing both continuity with hard landscaping in the stadium areas and a non-slip surface treatment.

This new stadium at Uxbridge admirably illustrates that the application possibilities for SureSet are endless with the system also having been used extensively elsewhere for access roads and car parks, driveways, pedestrian areas, footpaths and cycleways, patios etc.
