Carillion plc - Carillion coastal project gets Royal seal of approval

Support services and construction company Carillion is delighted to announce that the HRH The Princess Royal will officially open a multi-million pound land stabilisation and coast protection scheme this week (April 4).
Carillion Regional Civil Engineering has been carrying out the vital phase 2 environmental improvements aimed to save the town from destructive landslides and coastal erosion and Princess Anne will officially mark the opening.
The ambitious work programme is nearly complete and has been specially drawn up to minimise disruption to keep the town running as normally as possible.
Lyme Regis sits on one of the most unstable and actively eroding stretches of coastline in the country and is commonly referred to as the Jurassic coast.
Carillion has been responsible for the overall project which included land stabilisation and foreshore works.
Land stabilisation works included:
• Installation of 1200 piles to pin unstable ground to firmer ground below
• New drainage works, including counterfort and directional drilled drainage arrays
• Reinforced earthworks to form buttresses providing stability
• Hard landscaping including footways, timber boardwalk structure, masonry retaining walls and a mini golf course to provide amenity areas and enhanced public facilities
• Substantial planting and landscaping works to reinstate public and private gardens
Foreshore works included:
• Newly stocked sand and single beaches and a new promenade which stretches around the seafront
• Construction of 36000 tonnes of rock armour sea defence structures including dredging of sea bed and placing of rock from barges
• Construction of 250meters of pre-cast and in-situ concrete seawall
• Construction of 2 pre-cast concrete and masonry clad jetties finished with granite copings.
The Lyme Regis Coast Protection Scheme was initiated by West Dorset District Council in the early 1990s. It aims to provide long-term coastal protection for the town and to reduce damage and disruption caused by land slippage, through a long-term programme of engineering works.
Commenting on the official opening Carillion Regional Engineering Managing Director, Peter Clay said: “Carillion is delighted to be part of such a high profile project which aims to keep the coast safe for its residents and visitors for many more years to come.
“The success of this project has been down to close partnership working with the district council, as well as the local community who were involved in consultation forums and making choices about the final design.”
