Sapa Building Systems Ltd - SAPA window wall brings light to classrooms

An installation of Sapa Building Systems’ Dualframe Window Wall has transformed the classrooms of a South Wales school.
A continuous run of storey height elevations for classrooms were replaced with Sapa’s Window Wall in a project carried out by Sapa fabricator Carreg Fawr after Newport City Council decided to replace High Cross Primary School’s existing, poorly insulated steel windows that were proving costly for the school to maintain.
The specification of Window Wall offered several key benefits to the School and the Council that all contributed to the success of the project. The system’s concealed coupling detail ensured that the sight lines of the new facade were kept to a minimum to match the existing and therefore didn’t reduce the amount of light entering the classrooms. The Window Wall frames completely covered the space left by the existing timber subframes so that ‘making good’ of the surrounding walls was kept to a minimum, thus reducing disruption and installation costs.
The classrooms face an exposed playground and so the commercial doors that were integrated into the Window Wall all featured drained, low threshold cills to provide high levels of weather performance.
Both the School’s teaching staff and the council are delighted at the improved outlook. Robert Law, Newport City Council’s surveyor for the project, commented: We are delighted with this project. All of the classrooms are now much brighter, far warmer and drier and I know the school is equally delighted.”
