Johnson & Starley Ltd - Bradford Community Housing Trust fits 1500th Reno Boiler
Less than a year after changing to Johnson
& Starley for the supply of all its new central heating boilers,
one of the North of England’s biggest social housing providers
has installed it 1500th unit.
Bradford Community Housing Trust was one of the first RSL’s to
recognise the high standards of performance and reliability
offered by the RENO condensing boiler, and has been installing
them since early 2005 in both reactive maintenance situations
and as part of its planned capital works programme. Bradford
expects to install approximately 1500 RENO 30C High Efficiency
Combination Boilers per year of the current contract.
One of the reasons that the Bradford Community Housing Trust
chose the RENO range is the anticipated low life cycle cost over
a 15-year life expectancy. In this respect the quality of
components within the RENO boilers and their expected low
maintenance or replacement costs was an important consideration.
The Contract Development Manager for Bradford, Mr Gurjit Singh,
comments: “We selected the RENO over other high efficiency
boilers on the market following a technical appraisal including
a whole life cost exercise. We have worked with the company for
many years as our supplier of warm air central heating systems.”
“The RENO boilers are being fitted right across our area in
districts such as Shipley, Keighley and Ilkley. As well as the
one-off replacements where boilers have failed, we are also
installing between 50 and 100 RENO boilers at a time under
programme works contracts. While the emphasis at the moment is
on homes that have no central heating, or very old systems,
eventually the work will concentrate on replacement of existing
standard efficiency boilers”
Although Johnson & Starley’s service commitment is to attend any
boiler breakdown within 24 hours, the majority of call-outs are
being dealt with inside 12 hours, including many non-emergency
problems. The manufacturer has also provided all tenants with an
eight-point checklist to try and avoid unnecessary visits – such
as where, for instance, the thermostat may have been turned
down.
Under the arrangement, Johnson & Starley are supplying its
boilers to two specialist contractors, as well as to the
client’s direct labour organisation, Bradford Building Services.
Then for the planned replacement programme the RENO 30C combis
are being supplied to the heating sub-contractors working with
Bradford regeneration partners: Bullock Construction, Lovell and
Wates Construction.
Within the scope of these contracts, boilers have been installed
in places such as the Scholmoor Estate, the properties generally
being early post-war semis. For an installation at the Crossley
Wood Road flats, however the flexible flueing options available
with the RENO paid dividends. In one instance the flue has to be
taken one metre up, turned through a 90-degree bend and then run
another 3.5 metres. Many installations have required flues in
excess of six metres long.
Johnson & Starley was established in 1922 and for over 80 years
has provided innovation to the UK heating industry. As a
manufacturer of ‘Home Comfort Solutions’ the company offers and
extensive range of Part ‘L’ compliant warm air heaters and
