Carillion Plc - Carillion scoops engineering award for ‘S’ shaped footbridge

Support services and construction company Carillion has won an industry award for a stunning ‘S’ shaped cycle/footbridge in Carmarthen.
Carillion Regional Civil Engineering scooped the Institution of Civil Engineers (Wales), Roy Edwards Small Projects Award for its innovative ‘S’ shaped footbridge over the River Towy, for client Carmarthenshire County Council.
The unique structure forms a stunning gateway from the railway station and new coach park to Carmarthen town centre and it hoped its construction will provide a landmark feature which complements the county’s sustainable transport needs as well as invite investment into the area.
The £1.9 million project involved the design, fabrication and erection of a 150m twin cable stayed bridge, ‘S’ shaped in plan and curved in elevation, ancillary works included amendments to the Coracle Way roundabout and the construction of a new coach and car park by the railway station.
A significant feature of the design is the inclusion of public viewing areas so that both visitors and community members can enjoy the elevated views afforded of the town and the river.
Carillion Regional Civil Engineering project manager, Vickie Clark said: “We are tremendously pleased with the end result of this project. The successful outcome of this development is down to the close working relationship between all parties. The safe completion of this striking and unique footbridge over the Towy produced a low cost landmark structure fulfilling the client’s sustainable transport needs. Winning this award is testament to all the hard work invested by everyone involved in this innovative project.”
Council executive board member for regeneration Clive Scourfield said: “This inspiringly designed bridge has captured the imagination of all.
“The aim of uniting the railway station with the town for pedestrians and cyclists has been uniquely achieved. Carmarthen Civic Society has described it as ‘the most exciting project in the town for decades’.”
Fast facts:
• The ‘S’ shaped deck spans 28m over the north car park; 78m over the river and 44m over the flood relief channel – a total of 150m suspended
• The ‘S’ shaped deck is supported on tapered steel pylons 20m in height via 14 pairs of stays
• The bridge design draws inspiration from Carmarthen’s maritime heritage reflecting the form of a sailing vessel with masts projecting from the ships deck and the stays representing the rigging
• Ecological sensitivity of the river as a designated AfonTowy Site of Special Scientific Interest – LED deck up-lighting used to illuminate parapets and pylons, avoiding disturbance to migrating fish
• Bat boxes and bird nesting holes have been incorporated into the masonry cladding to the piers, whilst works were scheduled to avoid impacting on migration, breeding and other activities of the fauna, otters, sand martins, fish and bats
• Bridge sections delivered to site overnight due to their size – up to 21m long by 5.5m wide, ranging from 7T pylons to 28T central deck sections
• Each of the concrete bridge substructures is clad with local pennant stone, laid by an experienced local stonemason achieving a ‘random rubble’ finish which matches the castle walls
