Dewjo'c - DURHAM OFFICE SITE GOES GREEN

Leading North East architects Dewjo'c has been commissioned to design environmentally friendly offices for an expanding industrial estate in County Durham.
Work is underway on the £2.2 million project, to construct fourteen single story office units designed to address sustainable and green design principles at Low Willington Industrial Estate in County Durham.
Dewjo'c was commissioned by Durham County Council (with Wear Valley District Council) to create offices in keeping with green design principles, which includes rainwater harvesting and 'grey water' recycling where the water is reused and pumped back into the system.
The buildings are designed around a courtyard and face a south-westerly direction in order to capture maximum sunlight, as well as screening it from the prevailing winter winds.
The buildings use sustainable materials, integrating cedar boarding with contrasting brick and render panels all under a natural aluminium mono pitched roof. The grounds are planted with native tree planting to enhance the natural habitat, which also provides shade during summer months, whilst creating a natural barrier for noise.
The units, vary in size from approximately 680 sq ft to 1485 sq ft and provide flexible starter and move-on office accommodation.
Steve Baker, the Dewjo'c director responsible for overseeing the project, said:

With this particular project, we aimed to create a sustainable design, which embraces the principles of green design whilst providing a pleasant working environment.
"Dewjo'c is a company very much in keeping with the principles and values of sustainable development and we hope to see more offices of this design in the future. Each job brings its own unique requirements and challenges, but all are extremely worthwhile."
Stewart Watkins of Durham Council's business support arm said:
"The units at Low Willington will be a valuable addition to the portfolio of business accommodation on offer in County Durham.
"Providing high-quality, sustainable workspace in rural areas is identified as a key task in the Regional Economic Strategy. In a predominantly rural county like Durham, it is vital to ensure that the right infrastructure is in place to allow us to continue to create employment opportunities."
Bob Hope, strategic director of environment and regeneration at Wear Valley District Council said: "The scheme is a good example of our approach to regeneration. Working with partners we are embracing new design principles of sustainability which will help to achieve our long term vision of being carbon neutral by 2030."
The offices are due for completion in September 2007.
