Carillion - David Bellamy praises Carillion’s award-winning eco
building
Famous botanist David Bellamy applauded an eco
building built by support services and construction
company Carillion while presenting the company with its
third industry award this year.
The impressive building, was presented with a Gold Award
in the category of the Built Environment and
Architectural Heritage scheme, run by the Green
Organisation.
The building is the centre piece of a brand new £8m
works depot and is home to the City of York Council’s
Commercial Services department.
This is the third industry award the ground-breaking
project has won this year which includes:
• Institution of Civil Engineers (Yorkshire &
Humberside) ‘Highly Commended Award’.
• Considerate Constructors. 2007 National Award Winner.
‘Bronze’
The project also won Carillion’s Sustainability Project
of the Year 2007 at its own in-house awards.
The whole depot, which is a national exemplar of
sustainable construction with real time monitoring of
its performance, impressed judges at the Green Apple
Awards and is being used to manage the City of York
council’s housing, waste and roads needs.
Locally grown bales were used to provide the wall
insulation which is seven times more efficient than
building regulations advise.
The straw bale is encased in a timber surround and
reinforced with steel mesh prior to three coats of lime
render being applied to each face, producing a standard
panel of 2.9m high , 2.1 wide and 0.5m thick weighing in
at 1.5 tonnes each.
The design maximises the use of natural daylight and
ventilation through window sensors which can detect high
temperature, rain or high wind and open and close
accordingly.
The full height window sections were selected to
compliment the straw clad panels and maximise on natural
light and ventilation.
A wind turbine due and solar panels generate energy for
the site - including a rainwater collection system so
rain water can be recycled and used to wash depot
vehicles rather than using clean tap water - is also an
eco feature.
The substantial array of workshop buildings have been
designed to shed water to a central rainwater harvesting
underground tank and which is being utilised by the
industrial vehicle wash facility provided.
Previously, council vehicles were washed at the depot
using tap water costing the council a total of £25,000 a
year.
With the new system, vehicles will be washed with
recycled 'grey' water, reducing water consumption by
50%.
The south facing roof of the eco building has a photo
voltaic system installed, helping to generate
electricity for the buildings lighting system.
And, solar thermal panels are planned to be installed on
the ancillary buildings sufficient to suit the site
needs for hot water.
The eco building also includes an Interpretation Room,
this will provide an area for training on sustainable
building design and will be used as a national resource
for learning and education on sustainable construction.
Carillion, senior contracts manager Brian Dunn said: “It
has been great for Carillion to have been part of such a
ground-breaking project which has gained national
recognition.
“Helping businesses to embrace sustainable solutions is
one of our key strengths.”
“The project has been a real success given the close co
operation and support offered by not only the Carillion
design team, the Carillion regional civil engineering
and building staff but also the City of York management
team and their consultants.”
Eco facts:
• The Eco Depot office will give a 76 per cent reduction
in energy use compared to a traditionally built, air
conditioned office of the same size.
• The energy efficiency of the Eco Depot office will
give savings of 155 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year
• Water consumption will be reduced by 50 per cent when
recycled rainwater is used for washing vehicles
• Electricity generated on site, from renewable sources
will provide 12 per cent of the amount currently used
• Environmentally-friendly materials will save 1,746
tonnes of carbon dioxide
• Under floor heating will save an additional 40 per
cent on heating bills and the building’s design will
maximise the use of natural daylight and ventilation.
