Gent by Honeywell - Gent short-listed for Innovation Award at
International Fire Expo
Gent by Honeywell’s presence at International Fire
Expo 2007 at the NEC, Birmingham in May, demonstrated
the company’s ability to apply its expertise to
designing Fire Detection and Alarm (FD&A) systems that
reduce false alarms to an absolute minimum. Current
statistics from HM Fire Service Inspectorate show that
one third of all false alarms are due to a FD&A system
or its constituent components.
Gent took the opportunity to show how their FD&A systems
can achieve superior discrimination by using their
market leading S-Quad multi-sensor detectors, that
employ dual angle optical scatter technology. This makes
S-Quads so accurate that they are actually capable of
distinguishing between steam and smoke particles -
visitors were hugely impressed by a live demonstration
showing the S-Quad ignoring steam and reacting very
quickly to fire. When this is coupled with the heat and
CO sensors that can be included within the device and
the sophisticated software and data logging capabilities
of Gent’s powerful Vigilon panels, false alarms can be
virtually eliminated.
Part of the Gent stand was devoted to the integrated
state-of-the-art fire detection, voice alarm and PA
system that was specially developed in conjunction with
BAA for Terminal 5 at Heathrow airport. It is the first
such system in the world to employ addressable speaker
loops, each supporting up to 60 fault tolerant wired
loud speakers in 4 zones. The system, Epsilon, attracted
massive interest from visitors responsible for large
construction sites all around the world and was also
short-listed for the Innovation Award category at the
Fire Industry Awards.
Gent’s voice portfolio with its latest market leading
developments drew the attention of end users looking for
high performance integrated fire and voice alarm systems
for sites of all types and size.
Gent ran their successful “Striking the Balance” CPD
seminar twice during the show - both were well attended
and resulted in numerous enquiries for the CPD to be
delivered to Consultants and end users after the show.
“Striking the Balance” is aimed at improving the quality
of fire detection and alarm systems installed today by
presenting guidelines for reducing false alarms without
compromising the detection of real fires quickly.
