CIWM - CIWM launch New Construction Waste Training

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) is launching a new training course for people in the construction sector who require an understanding of waste management and minimisation.
The CIWM's Waste Awareness Certificate (WAC) is already well established, with over 4,200 people enrolling since it was set up in 2003. The new WAC (Construction) Certificate is a one day foundation course based on the original course which has been tailored to meet the specific requirements of the construction industry.
Delegates attending the training course will learn the true costs of waste and ways to reduce it throughout the lifecycle of a construction project. It is estimated that 109 million tonnes of waste is generated by the construction industry every year, 80 per cent of which could be designed out before projects start.
The course is being launched ahead of new proposals from Defra to introduce Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs). This would make it a legal requirement for those in charge of construction projects in England worth more than £250,000 to assess how much waste will be produced during a project and plan how it will be reduced, recycled or disposed of responsibly.
Understanding the potential requirements of SWMPs and the basics on other key pieces of legislation will be covered in the training programme. It will also cover aspects such as managing site waste, evaluating the costs of construction waste, waste minimisation and the 'waste chain' - where delegates learn about how waste manifests during a project, what currently happens to it and better approaches that could be adopted in the future.
The WAC (Construction) training programme is a one day course with reference booklet, which concludes with a written test. Delegates that pass are awarded a Waste Awareness (Construction) Certificate.
The course is available through a network of Waste Awareness Registered Centres in the UK as either an open course or an in-house option. Prices per delegate start at £150.
The CIWM's WAC (Construction) training course has been developed in conjunction with CIRIA (Construction Industry Research and Information Association), Constructing Excellence, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), Envirowise, Taylor Woodrow, AMEC and the Environment Agency.
The CIWM is a not-for-profit organisation and the leading professional body for resources and wastes management.
