National Association of Women in Property - Women in Property announce Student Winner

Gillian Murray Chairman of the South East branch (including London) of the National Association of Women in Property announced the regional winner of the Association’s s 20th Birthday Student Awards at a special event.
The winner, Sarah Hopkins is a Property, Planning and Development student at Kingston University wins £500, a work placement and the opportunity to compete against the eight other regional winners for the ‘Best of Best’ national Women in Property Student Award to be announced in September.
The Women in Property Awards judging panel interviewed six girls who were short listed from dozens of nominated 2nd year students studying the built environment at Brighton, Kingston, London South Bank, London Metropolitan and Reading Universities.
Judy Smith, Sarah’s tutor, describes her as a “talented student” who is “one of the highest achievers of her year group”.
Gillian Murray, Chairman and chartered building surveyor at leading building consultants Malcolm Hollis said “All the students we interviewed were winners and it is a pity that we could only give one prize., This Award scheme is just one way we can encourage them to go into an industry which has huge skills’ shortages.
“We are taking this initiative a step further by organising a seminar in the autumn where prominent women in our industry will share their inspirations. Our education roadshows will continue with members talking at career fairs and education events in schools and universities.”
Women in Property was the idea of Elspeth Clements, an architect who now has her own practice Clements and Porter, and Michelle Foster, a surveyor who is now the Regional Development Manager of the Devon and Cornwall Housing Association. Porter. They met at a property event 20 years ago and commented on the small number of women in the industry. From this chance meeting Women in Property was created.
The Association whose membership includes architects, surveyors, and other professionals encourages girls and women to go into the world of property and supports the retention of women in the industry through its unique mentoring programme.
Gillian Murray’s own inspiration for going into the surveying world was rising damp! Renovating her house gave Gillian an insight into the building world and she left behind her degree in languages and signed up for one in building surveying at Sheffield Hallam University instead.
