American Hardwood Export Council - AHEC goes for strength and
beauty at 100% detail
This year’s 100% Detail will see the debut of a
stunning brand new design of geodesic dome created in
American red oak by Gordon Cowley. The structurally
engineered dome will encompass the American Hardwood
Export Council (AHEC)’s exhibition space, showcasing its
strength and elegance to exhibition visitors.
Gordon Cowley’s reputation for pushing the boundaries of
construction in wood is well known to architects,
designers and contractors, with a vast range of work
from the Scottish Parliament Debating Chamber Roof with
EMBT/RMJM and the Wolfson Centre with ADP, to the Cutty
Sark Visitor Pavilion for Youmeheshe Architects /
Designmap.
David Venables, European director of AHEC anticipates
that the dome will become a focal point at the event. He
says: “This is the first time Gordon has created an
exhibition structure which is effectively a replica of
commercially available work. Red oak represents about
35% of the total American hardwood forest and because
the trees grow large and tall it offers better
specifications than most other types of oak. The slimmer
members, joinery performance and beautiful finish offer
affordable aesthetic design options not previously
available.”
The exhibition space will also show American hardwoods
used in recent projects across Europe, providing
inspirational visual proof of the versatility and
diversity of American hardwood species.
