HLM Architects - HLM Architects to deliver £43 million Newport
Schools
HLM Architects is designing two, new,
state-of-the-art schools to be built in Newport, South
Wales. Bettws and Hartridge High Schools will be the
first of three secondary schools to be replaced in
Newport by 2013 at a cost of approximately £43 million.
The schools will replace the existing poor quality
buildings, with excellent, contemporary facilities
promoting wider community based activities. The
buildings are to be designed as an educational hub
delivering facilities that can improve the quality of
life in and around these communities whilst supporting
social cohesion, inclusion and prosperity.
Early proposals show school buildings which are highly
accessible, welcoming and outward facing, promoting
sustainable solutions and in doing so, offering a
vibrant social heart to the community.
Richard O’Neil, director at HLM Architects, said: “These

educational environments, these schools can deliver a

these communities, engendering a sense of pride and
ownership. Through our Cardiff office, we as architects
are delighted to be part of this vision, supporting the
City Council in delivering these important projects.”
Construction will start on Bettws School at the
beginning of 2008 and is due to complete in late 2009.
This will be followed by Hartridge School to be
completed in 2010.
