Persimmon Homes - Persimmon exchanges contracts on nine acre site in Hull

The sale of the nine acre Newland Estate in Hull has moved an important step closer following the announcement Beverley-based Persimmon Homes East Yorkshire has exchanged contracts with the Sailors’ Families’ Society.
The news follows the agreement in October 2006 to lease for a nominal sum a quarter of the Estate to Hull City Council to ensure that local school children attending St Nicholas’ Primary School on the Estate would not be affected by its disposal by the Sailors’ Families’ Society.
The proceeds from the sale of the Estate will support the charity’s ongoing work looking after some four hundred and fifty disadvantaged children of seafarers in their own homes, not only in Hull and Yorkshire, but throughout the country.
Andrew Bowes, managing director for Persimmon Homes East Yorkshire said: “Naturally we are delighted to be named as the Sailors’ Families’ Society’s preferred bidder."
“Having built in Hull for many years we have established a strong reputation for the quality of our designs and finish of our product and it was factors such as these which have led to our appointment.
“We are proud to be behind what will undoubtedly become one of the most sought after residential schemes in the region and we look forward to preparing a planning application for Hull City Council, the next stage of this exciting development.”
Martin Needler, Chairman of the Sailors’ Families’ Society, added: “The decision to put the Newland Estate, our home since 1890, up for sale was a very difficult one for the Trustees to take however, our selection of Persimmon as the preferred bidder for the Estate was taken using a number of set criteria which all UK charities have to abide by. In essence, the Trustees are required to select the offer that provides the best value to the Sailors’ Families’ Society.
“It will be many months before the sale contract is completed, as Persimmon will now be submitting their development plans to Hull City Council for consideration by the Planning Committee. These proposals include the retention of the listed buildings on the Estate. We are therefore still a long way from being able to implement our plans to provide additional benefits to the families; however we continue to take new applicants who meet our criteria onto the Family Support Scheme.”
