Vencel Resil - Halls well that ends well with new Slimflex roof

Villages halls are often thought of as having a traditional design and construction, but the new Mosborough Village Hall, South of Sheffield is one of the first public buildings to feature an innovative new roofing system.
Jabroof SlimFix panels from Vencel Resil, were specified by Sheffield architects Architectural Design Studios and installed by main contractor Thomas Fredric Construction. The brief was to create a modern, thermally efficient building that could be erected quickly and was in keeping with its village location.
The panels were specified for the 262 sq metre roof as they provided a quick and easy method of constructing the pitched roof with high levels of energy efficiency achieved through the use of expanded polystyrene insulation which is integral to the panel’s design. Whereas conventional methods would have required the use of timber roof trusses, which can mean a time-consuming build, a Jabroof SlimFix roof can be installed to create a weather-tight seal within a day. The new roof for Mosborough Village Hall achieves a U-value of 0.16 due to the insulative properties of the EPS core, which means it easily meets current Building Regulations.
Neil Conway from Vencel Resil explains: “Developers and contractors are looking for ready-made energy efficient roofing systems that are quick to install as part of Modern Methods of Construction. As Jabroof SlimFix is available in pre-cut lengths this minimises the time spent on site and reduces the amount of waste material. Counter battens and gutter laths are already fitted, so the roof can be installed quickly and easily. This project shows how versatile the system is as it is as relevant for residential developments as for schools and commercial buildings.”
Freddie Ward (Jnr) from Thomas Fredric, who installed the SlimFix roof panels, said: “Because the panels are structural we only needed to fit a purlin along the centre of the roof, which meant that we were ready for the panels almost immediately.
“Normally on a traditional timber roof, it would take much longer to erect the trusses before we could even begin the roof covering. This is the first time we had used Jabroof SlimFix and we were amazed with how quickly it could be constructed, which saved us several days on site. We will definitely be using this type of roofing system on future projects.”
Jabroof SlimFix panels are manufactured with an internal core of thermally efficient expanded polystyrene (EPS) sandwiched between two moisture-resistant chipboard panels. A 200mm EPS core was used, although different thickness of material is available, depending on project requirements. The construction of Jabroof SlimFix provides excellent thermal performance and both the board and expanded polystyrene are fully recyclable, so meeting with sustainability requirements.
This innovative roofing system is becoming more popular with developers for use in the construction of townhouses which tend to have a smaller footprint. The advantage of using Jabroof Slimfix is that being structural it creates an open usable roof space because it eliminates the need for trusses and braces. The advantage of creating a usable roof space is to add square footage to a property and therefore increase its value.
The panels themselves create a warm roof construction because the insulative element is sandwiched between the moisture-resistant boards, rather than at ceiling level as on a traditional trussed roof.
Neil Conway adds: “The reason for using Jabroof Slimfix instead of a more conventional roofing system was to maximise energy efficiency, whilst opening up the roof area. When you walk inside the hall you immediately get a feeling of light and space, which is ideal for the type of social functions and activities they plan to host here. Use of this system meant being able to create this effect without compromising thermal performance.”
The roof panels were craned onto the building and Vencel Resil supplied a harness to lift the panels into place. Each panel features three convenient vertical counter battens, which meant the contractors could begin adding the roofing materials as soon as the Jabroof SlimFix panels were secured. The roof panels were finished with natural slate to ensure the whole development complemented its surroundings.
Jabroof SlimFix has been approved by the British Board of Agrement (BBA) and includes Class E flame-retardant EPS as defined in BS EN 13163.
