Cornish Architects - Short-Listed on Major Museum Competition

Cornish Architects has been short-listed in competition to design a new museum and exhibition space for a major UK charity based in central London.

The proposed building will not only serve to house the organisation’s collection of rarities but will also be a public interface to raise awareness of the charity and help recruit volunteers and attract donations.

The designated site for the museum consists of part-basement and part-undercroft space that is currently used for parking and storage. Cornish Architects’ designs have given careful consideration to how the building can interact with and attract the passer-by. The plans create a semi-public space between existing pillars of the undercroft and create a glazed enclosure incorporating displays within the glass skin. The external space together with the glazed skin will draw people in from the pavement and will blur the delineation between outside and inside space. Their analysis also considers extending the ground floor and linking it with the basement via a vertical circulation route that will provide display areas to link the lower and upper volumes.

Inside, display cabinets holding the charity’s exhibition pieces, will sit alongside versatile display walls, all of which will be considered under the guidance of the museum’s curators.
