This dynamic and progressive company is the first in the UK to have installed the heavyweight, five-axes Brembana G-Rex/CNC milling/routing machines and Fanuc control system, allowing it to offer finely sculpted and precision fluted work in reduced timescales.

APS also prides itself on its procurement of stone, which it can source from anywhere in the world; and the selection of the right stone or combinations of stone are, to APS, of paramount importance to the extent that the company takes clients through a careful programme of questions in order to identify precisely the right stone for the job.

At APS Masonry, a green approach prevails, where by stone waste is minimised and water used in the production process is filtered, cleaned and recycled.

APS work on a range of prestige projects, comprising both new build and restoration, and incorporating commercial contracts, private residential work and hard landscaping which includes bridges and gazebos. The company always welcomes the opportunity to work closely with design professionals and clients, many of whom benefit from their proactive involvement.

Dating back to 1815 and with a provenance that includes some of the finest stonework on Oxford colleges and University buildings, the company’s more recent work includes Tusmore House, which won the New Build Award and a Georgian Society Award. Other work includes the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden; Blenheim Palace, the Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Christ Church Cathedral, Merton College, the Said Business School in Oxford, Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons and estates in Wisconsin and Florida, USA.

Currently, APS is working on a stable block as part of a project for a large family home, two large country houses in the UK, a corporate building in the city of London, and a property in Knightsbridge. APS is also involved in restoration work on the various colleges in Oxford.

Not wishing to rest on its stone laurels, APS has an active apprentice scheme (currently six apprentices) which not only teaches its youngsters the finest skills and craftsmanship of the past, but how to integrate and work with the latest technology. However, as Managing Director, Jonathan Grayburn, comments “Although we have some of the most technologically advanced equipment in our industry every single piece of machined stone is still carefully finished by hand”.
