Support services and construction company Carillion has handed over a new Welsh language school with eco friendly features for more than 200 pupils in time for a new academic year.

More than 200 pupils will return to a brand new school following the completion of Ysgol ID Hooson in Rhos.

The school which has opened on the former Pant Brickworks site has taken less than a year to complete and marks the start of work on the refurbishment of the English medium school at the former Ysgol Rhos site.

The school is housed in a "U" shaped building with classrooms opening out onto a courtyard space which can be used for play and outdoor classes.

Its low design minimises the impact on the surrounding landscape and the main hall has curved steel cladding with glazing at a high level, giving the elusion of the roof floating over the walls.

Attention has also been paid to the environment and the new school has a ground source heat pump that draws heat from the earth to provide heating and hot water.

Ancillary electric power is also provided by roof mounted photo voltaic modules produced by Sharp.

There are two grass sports pitches and hard play areas marked out for games. Nursery, reception and years 1 and 2 have their own self contained outdoor classrooms ready for Foundation Phase education.

Carillion as the main contractor for the project is delighted to have again completed the school on time and on budget following recent successes at Ysgol Penygelli and Ysgol Bryn Tabor in Coedpoeth.

Carillion site manager Lee Mottram, said: "This has been a challenging and enjoyable project to be a part of.

“The many renewable energy sources within the project will not only benefit the school and the environment but will also aid in the education of the pupils to become more environmentally aware.

“This is the third school in Wrexham that Carillion have delivered to Wrexham County Borough Council on time, on budget and to a high quality and I am confident that with the same team in place, the refurbishment and extension to the English medium school will be just as much a success as this one has been."

Chair of Governors and Leader of Wrexham Council, Councillor Aled Roberts said:

"This is another important step in ensuring that Wrexham provides first class facilities for all of its children.

“More importantly for the Rhos area these facilities are second to none and for the first time children attending a Welsh Medium school in the village will no longer be taught in dilapidated mobile classrooms but will be able to access one of the best facilities in the UK.

“I also look forward to the commencement of building works to provide comparative facilities for children who are attending the English medium schools in the Rhos area."
