WindowMaster uses intelligent motors to protect against entrapment

WindowMaster, Europe's largest provider of natural ventilation solutions, is now able to offer a unique system that limits the possibility of people being trapped in automated windows. The WindowMaster NV AdvanceT solution, used in conjunction with a suitable window profile, can meet the requirements the European norm EN 60335-2-103.
As more schools and other public and private sector buildings install automated window systems to benefit from natural ventilation, the possibility of fingers and hands accidentally becoming trapped as windows close automatically has become an increasing concern.
To overcome this, the approach taken by some architects has been to 'design-out' the possibility of entrapment by, for example, raising the height of automated windows above 2.5 metres to prevent people from reaching them. However, this can constrict building design and be to the detriment of occupiers.
WindowMaster's NV AdvanceT window automation system uniquely incorporates 'intelligence' within each motor used for opening and closing windows. Microprocessors installed within theses devices monitor in real-time the amount of electrical current being drawn and the precise position of the window to an accuracy of less than a millimetre.
If an object, or hands or fingers, becomes trapped in a window and prevents it from closing the amount of current drawn by the motor instantly increases. This is detected by the microprocessor which immediately reverses the motor to release the window, therefore preventing the possibility of serious injury.
The European norm EN 60335-2-103 deals with the safety of electric drives for horizontal gates, doors and windows and it also covers the hazard associated with the movement of driven parts.
Its introduction will affect the specification of window automation systems used in the design of new buildings as well as those that are retrofitted. Architects and specifiers will need to select systems that meet the requirements of the legislation and prevent the possibility of injury through entrapment.
