Icopal launches new PARABIT Hot Melt System

A high-performance waterproofing system that is set to slash installation times for inverted, green and plaza deck roofs as well as roofing sub-structures and access roadways has been launched by Anderson Monarflex, the subsidiary of Icopal.
Parabit is a seamless, reinforced, hot-applied, modified-bitumen membrane designed for concrete substrates that can be installed in far less time than traditional pour-and-roll or torch-on waterproofing membranes, reducing overall roofing costs for specifiers and contractors.
An optimum solution for speed of application and cost-effectiveness, Icopal Parabit is a single component application that does not require the complex preparation or curing stages typical of cold-applied systems, saving further application time.
Detailing such as upstands and plinths can also be completed before the main system is applied so the time of skilled sub-contractors is used more effectively. And when correctly installed, the system should last the lifetime of the building, eliminating possible future replacements costs.
In addition, the membrane retains its self-healing properties throughout its working life, maintaining waterproofing integrity even after minor construction or maintenance punctures.
Parabit can be installed in temperatures down to -25ºC, helping to maximise installer productivity and the surface is impervious to snow, frost and rain immediately after the waterproofing is applied.
Icopal’s Parabit system comprises five elements – a low-solvent based bituminous surface primer/conditioner which is applied by roller and is tack-free in one hour. This is suitable for both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
Over this goes a rubberised bitumen compound which is heated in a twin-walled oil or air jacketed mixer and applied by squeegee. This is actually applied in two layers of 2.3mm and 3.2mm between which goes a reinforcing fabric of spun-bonded polyester. This should be applied while the first layer of membrane is still warm.
The final stage is the application of a protection layer of either a glass-fibre reinforced membrane for inverted roofs, an SBS modified membrane for plaza decks or podiums, or a heavy-duty SBS modified membrane for use beneath access ramps, heavy pedestrianised walkways and vehicular access ways.
On completion, the membrane should be tested electronically to ensure the system is free from punctures or penetrations that might affect its integrity. Accessories include a rootbar protection layer for extensive and intensive green roofs, protection and drainage boards, flashings, sealants, termination bars and detailing sheets.
