Space Airconditioning plc - Air-Source Heat Pumps to Replace Conventional Central Heating Boilers

Space Air, the Guildford based Daikin distributor, predicts a strong demand for air- source heat pumps designed principally for space/water heating.
According to Space Air there has been a significant increase in enquiries relating to ground-source heat pumps, however the nature of the enquiries indicate only a basic awareness of the implications of considering this technology in both commercial and residential applications, with little or no understanding of the associated ground work costs and practical difficulties. “By contrast,” said a spokesman from Space Air, “air-source heat pumps can offer significant advantages over ground-source. Air-source heat pumps have been available for much longer and sold in larger numbers worldwide and have benefited from greater investment; as a result, the technology is further advanced than with ground-source alternatives. This coupled with the fact that air-source heat pumps do not require any expensive, disruptive and space consuming ground works, means they are substantially cheaper and easier to install - and no less efficient.” Space Air continued, “we are fortunate enough to distribute the very extensive range of one of the world’s largest and most innovative heat pump manufacturers, we see it as our responsibility to help the customer to decide what is the most practical, energy efficient and cost effective solution to his needs.”
“Air-source, air to water heat pumps, designed principally to replace the need for a conventional space/water-heating boilers, are already available. In some cases, no refrigerant pipework is involved; therefore it is not essential for them to be installed by refrigeration or air conditioning specialists, which should have great appeal to the heating and plumbing industries.
All that is necessary is to connect a single-phase power supply into the externally mounted air to water heat pump and connect the central heating pipework as one would to a conventional boiler.”
Daikin has one of the largest selections of heat pumps to be featured on the Carbon Trust’s Energy Technologies List that qualify for enhanced Capital Allowances and their air-source heat pumps qualify for reduced rate VAT in residential applications. It is anticipated that by April 2007, under the “Low Carbon Buildings Programme” or “LCBP” all genre of heat pumps for space/water heating will be able to benefit from grant aid in residential applications. Space Air hopes that this in turn will result in more public information being readily available, on the various different types of heat pump, to help the energy conscious home-owner make an informed choice.
