British Gypsum first again for sustainability

British Gypsum is fast becoming the front-runner in sustainability, with news that it has just been awarded a prestigious sustainability award by a second leading UK construction company.
Taylor Woodrow introduced a new sustainability category to their annual Supplier Awards in 2007 to draw attention to this increasingly important area of their business, and provide a focus for their suppliers.
In announcing the winner, Taylor Woodrow Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Neil Johnson, told the audience at the annual Awards dinner on Thursday 15 February, “in selecting a winner for the first supplier sustainability award, we considered suppliers to Taylor Woodrow who are currently supporting us in this vital area – and found that many have yet to make a significant contribution. One supplier stood out over all others for their proactive approach and drive towards management of waste, its impact on the environment and its disposal costs, that supplier being British Gypsum.
“We made the decision to open up the awards, for the first time, to an ‘indirect’ supplier – all British Gypsum products are purchased via installers on a ‘supply and fix’ basis – because we wanted British Gypsum to be seen as a role model for our other suppliers” continued Neil Johnson.
Taylor Woodrow Operations Director, Dr Ed Hinchcliffe presented the award to British Gypsum Managing Director, Mike Jones.
The award is a recognition of the way that British Gypsum has worked with Taylor Woodrow to manage waste plasterboard on its sites, addressing every aspect of waste, from initial system designs and details that reduce the amount of waste generated, to management of on-site waste, and finally, collection and recycling of plasterboard waste produced.
“We take an holistic approach to waste”, said Mike Jones, “using our expertise to design systems that reduce the amount of waste generated and then taking the onus of managing any waste that is produced, off the shoulders of the client.
Our approach not only reduces cost for the client and provides data to support his ongoing waste reduction programme, it provides spin-off benefits, including improved site safety, reduced landfill, and preservation of natural resources, as we are now feeding up to 18% recycled material back into our production processes.”
This latest award comes only months after British Gypsum received a similar award from AMEC for plasterboard waste reduction and recycling at Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital Treatment Centre, an NHS Estates Procure 21 project.
