Cabinco - Log Cabin building for RSPB Conwy

Cabinco worked with the RSPB’s North Wales Management Team to develop plans for a new visitors’ centre at the Conwy Reserve. The site on the edge of the Conwy Estuary received a £400,000 redevelopment this year. Cabinco provided the main building for the new visitors centre and construction was completed by our skilled team in a record eight weeks between May and July 2006. The new visitors centre provides shop, teaching area and new offices for the staff.
Challenging Ground conditions from soft silt and sand meant that specialist contractors had to drive piles of 330mm diameter up to 8m deep on which to support the cabin. Due to the high cost of the piles Cabinco were briefed to minimise the number needed. This was achieved by using a heavy duty glue laminated base frame of 140x360mm glulam. Infill joists were then hung between the main frame members.
Once the frame was fully installed and levelled, build of the walls of 68 x 135mm double T&G logs was able to commence. The speed of this stage of the build is facilitated by careful laying out of the components around the cabin, all of which are individually numbered. The build sequence starts with a ½ log which is fixed to the base and subsequent logs laid on top alternating with each other at right angles to lock in. Once the wall is 3 courses high the whole structure is again “trued” to the frame and a plywood sub floor is laid (after insulation and services have been installed) which not only gives a working platform but also affords stability and rigidity to the frame. The walls themselves have wooden pegs driven in longitudinally at regular intervals to give added “stiffness”.
Roof construction is “conventional”. Each pair of rafters is halved and bolted together where they meet at the ridge. The rafters are designed to slide to accommodate differential wall shrinkage. Specially designed “slipper” brackets provide location at wall plate level.
The rafters are decked with T&G OSB followed by Kingspan insulation board, monaperm breather, counter battens, and battens, all connected using “headlox” fixings. Natural slate to finish.
First fix services were then installed on the outer skin of the external walls, and in what would be the roof void. Ultimately, the ceiling bays formed between the “truss” panels are all clad with T&G boarding fixed to the undersides of the rafters.
At this stage, all external joinery: windows and door-sets are installed. These components are supplied pre-finished and pre-glazed (where appropriate) and are of an incredibly high standard. All doors facilitate wheelchair access and have flush sills.
All joinery items are installed using a loose tongue system with “expansion gaps” above them to accommodation building settlement. These gaps are insulated using proprietary foams.
Following first fix, Cabinco’s last major job is to insulate and clad the external walls with boarding to match the log profile. EXTERNAL cladding has been adopted by the company as directors believe it far superior to the more common internal cladding, particularly in an exposed and marine setting such as Conwy. External cladding allows relatively easy access to any services within the walls should the need arise – without having to remove internal fixtures and fittings, or disturb building users.
Trimming the building includes capping external exposed end grains; to further prevent ingress of moisture on such an exposed site; along with fitting conventional fascias, barges, and internal second fix joinery.
Alan Davies, Centre Manager reports that the building progressed quickly and has met with lots of interest
