S&P Coil Products Ltd - SPC heats up Historic Town Hall

Specialist manufacturer and supplier of heating equipment SPC (S&P Coils) has provided a heating solution for a town hall that was once home to the family of poet William Wordsworth.
The heating experts have supplied the historic Eden District Council Town Hall in Penrith, Cumbria, with an Airdor Compact 400 air curtain. The freestanding curtain has been positioned beside the front doors to prevent heat loss as scores of staff and visitors pass through entrance each day.
The device was finished in a beige colour, to blend in with the colours of the hall’s interior. It was also specially adapted so it could be interlocked to the town hall doors, enabling it to turn on and off as the doors open and close and saving more energy.
Architect Paul Brunsdon, of Eden District Council, said SPC was chosen to provide the heating solution because of the excellent performance and aesthetics of its Airdor Compact 400.
“We needed a very attractive unit to overcome heat loss, as it is in a very prominent position, and we also needed an appliance that gave off sufficient heat because of the number of times the door is opened each day,” he explained.
“We chose the Airdor Compact 400 because of its modern style, which is a great contrast to the historic architecture of the building. Because it is freestanding, it means that the ceiling mouldings have been preserved.”
The air curtain was installed as part of a £65,000 development programme to create a contact centre in the reception area of the building, where residents can make enquiries and pay their bills.
In the 19th century the building was two houses, one of which was home to William Wordsworth’s cousin Captain John Wordsworth. The houses were converted into the Town Hall in 1905.
Mr Brunsdon added that the new air curtain was a vital part of the new contact centre.
“The centre is the main point of contact for the council,” he said. “It’s a big open space with a prominent central staircase, where a few hundred people visit each week. Without the curtain the heat would have simply gone out pf the door and it would have been very uncomfortable.”
The Airdor Compact 400 is a vertical air curtain guarding doorways from the ingress of cold air, ideal for applications where wide doorways require protection from outside elements.
It is part of SPC’s Airdor range of air curtains which are designed to offer a comfortable welcome for workers and customers, in a wide range of premises where the doors may remain open for long periods of time.

The SPC Airdor curtains can be floor standing, mounted on a wall or ceiling, or out of sight in ceiling voids. Maintenance is easy and slot-in filters can be removed and replaced by non-specialist staff.
