Enterprise Inns - Pub Chain's Partnering Scheme Takes Off
Enterprise Inns – one of the UK’s leading pub
chains – is forging ahead with its plan to make partnering its only
procurement method.
The initiative – to slash the number of contractors from nearly 1000
to just 25 – is now well under way with all Enterprise property
staff now having completed a two-day workshop aimed at changing
mindsets and moving away from the traditional, combative approach.
Head of Property Russell Burton said: “The workshops were designed
to create an environment where the whole team embraces the idea of
partnering and understands the need to develop different
relationships, built on mutual respect. It’s about working together
collaboratively, as opposed to unhealthy competition. We know this
will take time, but we believe we are on the right track.”
In addition the first contractors to be signed up under the new
arrangement have also started to go through the newly launched
Enterprise Contractors Induction Scheme, which is an adapted version
of the company’s staff programme. This will help contractors
discover more about Enterprise, its values and working practices.
“Our priority is to make sure that our partners know more about our
business and the part they can play in helping us create some of the
UK’s very best pubs. The feedback we’ve had so far has been very
positive and we believe that other pub companies will follow our
example.”
His enthusiasm is echoed by Rick Firth, the Managing Director of RDF
Building Services Ltd based in Leeds. The company, which was
launched in the early 90s, now employs around 120 people.
Rick said: “We’re obviously delighted to have been selected as a
partner. This status provides us with a much better opportunity to
develop a long-term working relationship with Enterprise. For too
long the industry has been divided by conflict. This contributes to
poor morale among consultants, contractors and suppliers.
“One of the major benefits is our involvement in projects from the
concept stage and our ability to make decisions in a blame-free
environment of trust. There’s no doubt that this will improve the
project outcomes in terms of cost, time and quality.
“Going through the process has helped us to focus more sharply on
various aspects of our own business. For example strategic planning,
our carbon footprint, the introduction of a dedicated health and
safety officer and staff empowerment.”
Enterprise Inns is a FTSE 100 company and the property department,
which is registered as a chartered building consultancy, has
responsibility for managing £5.3 billion of assets.
