Wates Rates Safety Bonus

Scratch card based safety initiative ‘Safety Bonus’ has made its debut with Wates Construction on their £25m North Liverpool Academy project.
Wates Project Manager, Tony Foster, opted for Safety Bonus as a means of recognising worker involvement in health and safety to promote an intrinsically motivated team. Its introduction is a first for Wates but also the UK Construction Industry.
For Tony the use of Safety Bonus represents one of the twelve company and site specific standards that are a feature on all Wates construction sites. Their trial of 500 cards is expected to last a few months before a review determines if the initiative will benefit other elements of Wates’ operation.
“Keeping people enthused and switched on to safety is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge in our modern society; but Wates have led the way for construction, demonstrating that innovation makes more business sense than resting on your laurels. It’s now just a question of who will represent which industry next”, says Marie Beer, Safety Bonus client manager.
As feedback from the likes of Investors In People and the Confederation of British Industry shows, on the Safety Bonus web site, the importance of ‘worker involvement’ is crucial to the success of any health and safety strategy.
Coupled with the objectives of Safety Bonus this sentiment is clearly hitting home with some well known industry names. Safety Bonus is currently on trial at companies such as Petronas, Severfield Rowen PLC and Shell; and with sponsorship deals for next years awards quickly being taken up the initiative is clearly gathering pace.
