NEW NATURAL INSULATION COMPANY IS LAUNCHED

A new company, Black Mountain Insulation, which makes insulation from sheep’s wool has been unveiled at the Ecobuild exhibition at Earl’s Court. Black Mountain is the first UK copany to invest in a dedicated factory to manufacture natural wool insulation for projects across the UK and Ireland from its factory in North Wales.
With numerous technical and environmental advantages, including the ability to manage condensation and ease of installation, natural insulation such as wool is becoming more and more popular amongst specifiers and builders.
Condensation is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry. Unlike man-made materials, when wool absorbs moisture it actually gives off energy which warms the wool and prevents condensation. This is a significant benefit over traditional man-made insulators, none of which have this capability. Black Mountain Wool insulation is also a major step forward in fighting condensation-related illness.
In light of growing concerns relating to energy costs and global warming, wool insulation is also a truly sustainable solution to both energy consumption and the effects of climate change, using only 15 per cent of the energy of a comparable man-made material. As a natural by-product of sheep farming, the only limit to the supply of wool is the number of sheep farmed - justifying its stature as one of the earth’s most sustainable resources.
Additionally, wool is biodegradable in soil and easily recyclable, which BMI can use to its advantage, by recycling all cut-offs to create a zero waste production process.
Expected to last for many years, wool does not lose its resilience or compact over time, which means it is never likely to need replacing. In addition, wool carries with it many safety benefits, including being low-allergy and non-combustible.
Andrew Evans, Chief Executive of Black Mountain Insulation, says: “Black Mountain Insulation was formed to meet the growing demand for high quality natural wool insulation, and the interest shown in the company at the eco-exhibition shows there is a clear market for it. Natural insulation currently equates to less than one per cent of the market, and this is something that we are sure will grow substantially over the coming years.”

Sourced from the hill farms of mountains in Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England, Black Mountain is backed by the Welsh Government and has received European funding to help support local manufacturing and hill farming.
