British Gypsum acoustic ceilings improve court hearing

Gypsum Gyptone acoustic boards have been chosen to provide improved
speech clarity and aesthetics at Loughborough’s new Magistrates
Court.
Walls and ceilings within the courtrooms have been lined with the
Gyptone boards, which feature a regular pattern of full depth
perforations and a special acoustic tissue backing that combine to
provide a Class ’C’ absorber with improved reverberation time and
all-important speech clarity, ensuring that the proceedings can be
clearly heard by everyone in the court.
Specified by architects Stephen George and Partners because they
offered unique design coupled with performance that fully met all of
the criteria laid down by the project’s acoustic consultants, Arup
Acoustics, the Gyptone ceilings have been carried through into the
corridors of the new building. Here, they were installed in an
interesting ‘curved wave’ design to enhance appearance and maintain
a comfortable, calm environment for the public and for witnesses, as
they wait to be called into the court.
Widely used for prestige applications where a modern appearance and
controlled acoustic environment are critical, the 2.4m x 1.2m
full-size Gyptone boards are jointed to provide a monolithic
appearance, with their special ‘4 taper edge’ profile enabling
perfectly flat, smooth and strong joints to be achieved for a
totally seamless finish, even in demanding lighting conditions.
The Gyptone ceilings, installed by Leicester-based specialists
Elmsmere Ceilings, have the added benefit that they can be
redecorated without affecting acoustic performance, ensuring that
the unique internal appearance of the court building can be
maintained into the future, with minimal impact on the ongoing
maintenance budget.
