DKS Architects - Property ladder plan launched

A HEAD-turning housing scheme aimed at helping first time buyers get onto the property ladder has been unveiled in Thornaby.
The eye-catching modern homes designed by DKS Architects would be built on the site of the former SD Print and Design at Martinet Road and would be priced from £69,950. DKS has designed a range of studios and apartments on behalf of development company Kube², which are intended to make the most efficient use of space in order to make the building more affordable whilst still ensuring high quality.
Mark Barlow of DKS Architects said: “The Tees Valley is fast becoming a showcase for modern architecture and we see no reason that Thornaby should be left behind.”
Kube² wanted to create an exciting stylish housing design to reestablish the town as a place to buy affordable yet innovative homes.
“With first time buyers finding it increasingly difficult to get onto the property ladder, we believe this Kube² development in Thornaby will set a new trend and provide a blueprint for other areas of the UK to follow,” added Mark.
The quirky designs include 22 studio apartments and 12 one bedroom apartments, providing flexible living spaces. The intention is to construct the site as quick as possible while ensuring minimal disruption to nearby residents.
Mark said: “We know they will not be to everyone’s taste – but we believe there will be a number of people in Thornaby who will want to live in something really different compared to a standard flat and can see the concept really taking off.”
Katrina Rosser managing director at Kube² said: “We have invested a great deal of time and effort in coming up with a design that not only makes the best use of space, but also appeals to young professionals and key workers such as teachers and nurses.
“The new homes would make a hugely positive contribution to the local community and we are looking forward to receiving feedback on the plans from nearby residents.”
Leaflets illustrating and explaining the plans have been distributed in the area inviting residents’ comments which will be reviewed before being submitted to Stockton Council. If approved, work could start later this summer and be complete early next year.
Stokesley-based DKS Architects recently won a North-East architectural competition to design the wacky Marketing Suite at Middlehaven. It is one of the region’s leading architectural practices having also recently created its own in-house planning consultancy to add to its architectural and interior design skills.
