ICS saves world ski jump championships with emergency chiller

Energy came to the aid of the World Ski Jump Masters competition in
Bavaria, Germany by supplying emergency rental equipment to maintain
the quality of snow.
Unseasonably hot temperatures approaching 20°C threatened the
quality of the snow on the 140-metre long ski slope and the annual
event, which was held in Oberstdorf in February, was under serious
threat of cancellation.
In a bid to keep the event running, the organisers called in their
main refrigeration specialist who sub-contracted Cool Energy to
provide a creative cooling solution by installing a supplementary
cooling system to cope with the warm weather.
The ski slope was fitted with an additional water pipe system,
allowing a water/glycol mix chilled of –12°C to flow though the
slope’s floor. A 70kW fully packaged rental chiller with integral
pump and 400-litre thermal buffer tank was connected to the slope,
together with flexible insulated rubber water hose that directly
cooled the slopes cooling coil.
The chiller was set up 10 metres above ground and provided a
60-metre height difference between the chiller and the top of the
slope. The rental package had to be designed to manage and maintain
the correct pressure and flow rate throughout the application.
Once operational, the pipes where covered in snow and the biggest
challenge was then to
maintain an even temperature over the complete slope and landing
area.
Commenting on the operation customer Gottfried Strauss said:
“Thanks to the new range of Cool Energy rental equipment I can
confidently drive home as soon as the system had been commissioned
because it runs problem free.”
The event ran successfully for the organisers and the equipment
performed within specification throughout the rental period.
