Munters - Able Industries Installs Environmental Control System
 Injection
moulding of plastics is employed for the production of a
myriad of every day objects, and
this includes PET containers.
PET (PPolyethelene terephthalate) is processed for the
production of pre-forms and blow moulded containers for
food and beverage applications, including carbonated
soft drinks, bottled waters, juices, isotonics,
alcoholic beverages, edible oils, dres-sings, spreads
and sauces, together with PET containers to the
personalcare, household chemical and agro-chemical
industries.
Pre-forms are made in one process, where granulated or
powdered thermoplastic resin is fed from a hopper into
the Injection machine. Here the resin is heated and the
melted plastic is forced under pressure into the mould
cavity to make the Pre-form.
From here, the Pre-form is heated prior to entry into
the blow moulding process to form the finished item.
This full process can be carried out in 1 or 2 machines.
The mould is war-med before injecting and the plastic
is injected quickly to prevent it from hardening before
the mould is full. Pressure is maintained for a short
time (dwell time) to prevent the material creeping back
during setting (hardening).This prevents shrinkage and
hollows, therefore giving a better quality product.
The moulding takes on the shape of the mould cavity.
Problems can occur on the mould in the cooling
process, if the air surrounding the mould is humid.
Condensation can occur, and this moisture will be
present on the surface when the plastic is injected.
Moisture on the mould tool surface can cause corrosion
over time, but more importantly, the condensed water can
evaporate under heat and pressure causing damage and
disfigurement to the surface of the piece.
When dry air is not used, higher temperature cooling
water must be introduced to avoid condensation and the
speed of production has to be reduced.
The Munters dehumidifier is applied to supply dry air
continually through the mould section, below the
dew-point temperature of the optimum chilled water
supply temperature, to avoid risk of
condensation, and the benefits include:
