Arup & Kinnarps launch future-proofed bench system
Today marks the launch of Bench F—a
new ergonomic, future-proofed bench system that is the
result of a collaboration between Arup, the global firm
of designers, engineers and business consultants and
Kinnarps, Europe's 3rd largest office furniture
manufacturer.
Unlike traditional bench systems, Bench F allows
individual segments of the bench to be raised and
lowered according to user requirements and, more
remarkably, the legs do not define the working area of
an individual employee so chairs or under-desk storage
can be placed unrestricted along the bench.
The collaboration with Kinnarps was based on a brief
from Arup for an ergonomic, future proofed, bench system
for use in Arup’s offices globally. Aesthetics,
practicality and flexibility were considered in equal
measure throughout development and the resulting design
offers a bench system with clean architectural lines and
unparalleled versatility.
“The combination of Arup design and Kinnarps technology
has enabled us to develop a product that not only meets
Arup’s needs and exacting standards but which is also
applicable to the greater market.” Comments Rebecca

Bench F offers office managers the possibility of the
neat rows of a benching system with the versatility of a
height adjustable desk system; allowing taller or
shorter employees to sit comfortably, anywhere in the
floor plan”.
The under-structure of the bench allows a 450mm
freeboard, allowing a chair of under-desk storage to be
placed unrestricted along the bench The design uses the
opportunities created by the unique Kinnarps table top
assembly - a 50mm thick sandwiched honey comb structure
which is stiff enough not to need under structure to
support spans up to 3m. The desk top can be adjusted
between heights of 620 and 820mm from the floor.
Sustainability is also a key factor in the design of
Bench F, which incorporates Kinnarps patented laminate
surfacing. This means that unlike other benches/desks
the tabletop layers do not need to be separated for
recycling .
