AIRPORT EXPANSION NEEDN'T BE A DISRUPTION
 Modular Expertise Accommodates
Increase in Travellers at London City Airport
The recent surge in passengers caused by the addition of
new European and long haul routes, has seen the airport
turn to pioneering modular building specialist,
Britspace, to provide additional passenger lounge
accommodation, with minimal disruption to its schedules
and services.
Commencing in early April and avoiding peak air times,
Yorkshire-based Britspace will construct two passenger
lounges in just eight weeks, which will allow thousands
of additional passengers through the airport each year.
Utilising a sophisticated build process with the very
latest modular design and technology, the lounges will
be connected by a two storey walkway and linked to the
existing terminal by a modular bridge. Due to the
waterside location next to the Royal Docks, part of the
construction process will involve specialist build
activities carried out from floating pontoons, with
specialist divers present to provide additional safety
support.
David Jupp, Director of Sales & Marketing at Britspace,
says: "This project perfectly demonstrates our core
strength of providing a bespoke solution for potentially
complex projects, while avoiding disruption to daily
business operations. As our modules and components are
built in our factory in East Yorkshire, the site is
prepared to accept the modular building, thereby
significantly reducing the construction programme
compared with traditional build techniques. Quality is
assured through our comprehensive ISO9001:2000
accredited procedures.
The bespoke design consists of 50 modules designed
specifically to match the structural grid of the
existing concrete apron.

our staff and passengers."
To complement the existing terminal building and to
sustain the appearance, the new extension will be a
striking combination of Rainscreen Cladding and powder
coated aluminium windows.
Britspace's modules dramatically reduce build time and
construction costs, with the work at London City Airport
expected to be complete by the end of May 2008.
Britspace has a 99% track record of completing projects
on time and to budget.
