Clark Contracts - The Apprentice – You’re hired

Alan Sugar is not the only one with an eye for talent, one of Scotland’s largest regional building contractors swooped to sign up two apprentices who were about to lose their jobs with local companies.

Kevin McIntyre (20) from Greenock was in his second year painting and decorating apprenticeship when his boss decided to sell up and emigrate. Rather than abandon the hard work he had put in, Kevin contacted Clark Contracts in Paisley to ask if they would consider taking him on. So impressed were the bosses at the firm with his initiative that firm that gave him a job and agreed to pick up his apprenticeship programme.

Gareth Bland, Business Unit Manager at Clark Contracts said: “Kevin’s qualifications and personality impressed us at the interview and, after talking to his old boss, we were delighted to bring him on board.”

Another one of Gareth’s signings is local Paisley lad, Gary Burns a twenty-year old, third year apprentice roofer. He approached Clark Contracts when work at his old firm dried up and he was keen to complete his apprenticeship locally. He joined Clark Contracts at the height of the winter storms and soon found himself working alongside skilled craftsmen putting what he had learned at college into practice in the most difficult of conditions.

Gareth Bland again, “We see our apprentices as our investment in the future of Clark Contracts. We tell all of our apprentices that if they show commitment both at college and on site there will be a job at the end of it for them.”

Clark Contracts’ Insurance Division, provides insurance reinstatement work for many of the big insurers, including Halifax General insurance. According to Gareth this type of work requires a certain type of person and places a special responsibility on their shoulders. “We never forget that we are working either in someone’s home or on their property and we treat it with the utmost respect.”

Clark Contracts’ first impressions of the two apprentices have proved correct with both being singled out for praise in recent customer satisfaction surveys issued by the company.

The Division works on up to 1500 insurance-related jobs every year and turns over around £3 million annually from its offices in Paisley and Edinburgh.

Clark Contracts are currently looking for all trades apprentices to join their team at Edinburgh Park.
