New homes a step closer for former Steyning Workhouse site in Shoreham

With the formal appointment of Crest Nicholson as development partner, English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency, today took another step forward in the redevelopment of the old Steyning hospital workhouse site in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex.

Commenting on the appointment, David Ashworth, Regional Director, South-East at English Partnerships, said; “We are pleased that this project is now moving forward. Crest Nicholson shares our commitment to quality in construction and design and to achieving the highest possible environmental standards.

“We are looking forward to working with Crest and the local community to transform this redundant former hospital site into a truly sustainable new neighbourhood that will increase the number of affordable homes within Shoreham.”

English Partnerships, and Crest Nicholson, are looking to deliver approximately 220 new homes on the site, 35% of which will be affordable and divided between social rented and shared ownership. The majority of the homes will be new build however, to maintain and enhance the historical and conservation area setting; the company proposes to convert a number of the existing buildings to provide new accommodation.

Prior to submitting the planning application, English Partnerships and Crest Nicholson will consult with the community to inform and receive input from local residents and stakeholders. Proposed plans for the site will be on public display and feedback sought during two exhibitions which are scheduled to be held over the coming months. Representatives from English Partnerships, Crest Nicholson and their consultants will be present to answer any questions and discuss any matters raised.

The redevelopment of the site has already taken an exciting step forward with a new sixty bed care facility, situated in the south west area of the site, nearing completion. This new care home is being provided in conjunction with West Sussex County Council and has been constructed to English Partnerships’ sustainable build standards. West Sussex County Council has now adopted these standards for capital works projects such as care homes throughout West Sussex.

Crest Nicholson’s proposal for the redevelopment of the site successfully met English Partnerships’ evaluation criteria which included high levels of sustainability, design quality, estate management and experience of community engagement.

It is an exciting project that needs to be sensitively approached in order to preserve and enhance the historic setting that has sadly been abandoned for a number of years. Our aim is to incorporate as much of the site’s heritage into the new development in order to strengthen the existing community and give it a real sense of place.”
