UNDERWOOD CARPENTER GETS GOLD AWARD

Underwood Carpenter has won a Considerate Constructor Gold Award for their work on the Coventry City Centre IKEA store. The award was presented to UC team for exceeding the requirements of the Code of Practice.

The Considerate Constructor Scheme recognises contractors who have shown consideration for the needs of local residents and businesses. The scheme comprises a Code of Practice against which contractors are regularly monitored to ensure excellent standards are maintained.

The construction of the new IKEA store began in the summer of 2006 and was completed in December 2007.Consisting of almost 30000sq.m of retail space over 4 levels, above a three level 850 space car park, the city centre location on a tight site demanded that Coventry IKEA is a significantly different design from the company’s other stores both in the UK and across their worldwide operation.

By working as an extension to the IKEA in-house construction team, under a JCT Construction Management appointment, Underwood Carpenter overcame challenges including ordnance, culverts, contamination, deep pile construction, ground water, minimal site area, proximity to adjoining
boundary structures and community consultation.

David Underwood, Director of Underwood Carpenter comments: “We are delighted to have won this award. IKEA Coventry was the largest and most complex construction project we have worked on to date. The scale of the scheme meant there was an array of potential challenges which touched
all aspects of the surrounding community. To achieve this award is a vindication of how seriously we and IKEA take responsible development AND working with people in the community.”

The Code covers the following eight key points:

considerate - work must be carried out with consideration given to local
people and businesses
environment - noise must be kept to a minimum and pollution and waste must
be managed
cleanliness - all roads near site must be kept clean, dust to a minimum
good neighbours - information available about the site, consultation with
neighbours about work
respectful - covers appropriate dress and behaviour of contractors as well
as tidiness of site
safe - work to be carried out with the utmost care for passers-by and
neighbours, as well as workers
responsible - all employees, contractors and others working on site
understand and comply with the obligations of the code
accountable - contact numbers to be displayed for the public to contact
staff to take any immediate action necessary

A gold award is an exceptional achievement awarded to only a select number
of contractors who have met the stringent assessment of the CCS panel, other awards include silver and bronze.
