Penncricket adds Lyptus to door range

Penncricket Doors and Cubicles, the Birmingham based timber door and joinery specialist, has added Lyptus, the sustainable eucalyptus hardwood from Weyerhaeuser, as a standard finish option for its general construction and commercial door ranges.

Primarily used for beading, lipping and vision panels, Penncricket introduced Lyptus to give its customers a cost effective and sustainable alternative to traditional tropical hardwoods, such as mahogany, sapele and utile.

In addition to its commercial and environmental credentials, Lyptus is proving popular aesthetically, with the consistency of colour and smoothness of the grain allowing Penncricket to either colour match or contrast with veneers. Laminated blue doors with contrasting Lyptus lipping have already been used as part of a school refurbishment, with the product also adopted for use in offices, hospitals and other commercial applications.

With a service offering built on efficient turnaround times, Penncricket has benefited from a guaranteed supply of Lyptus, which is provided through Blumsom, the UK’s first approved stockist. Mark Burness, Penncricket Doors and Cubicles, explains: “We operate in a service industry where lead times are critical to a project. We hold some Lyptus in stock to enable us to meet short deadlines, and Blumsom has always been able to get more supplies out to us exactly when we need.”

In terms of door manufacture, Penncricket is finding Lyptus easy to work with, as the timber is exceptionally straight and dimensionally stable. Moreover, it machines well and accepts a variety of finishes, which means the product can be used on paint grade doors. The density of Lyptus also complies with fire ratings up to one and a half hours, giving Penncricket the flexibility to use it for both fire rated and non-fire rated interior doors.
European commercial director for Weyerhaeuser, John Guerin, comments: “Following the launch to Europe last year, Lyptus has emerged as a popular choice for interior joinery applications. Its strong environmental credentials and excellent stability makes it a competitive alternative to traditional tropical hardwoods, that is being proven by the increased adoption by companies such as Penncricket.”

Following the approval of Lyptus for window manufacture earlier this year, its use for timber window production is also expected to rise.

Lyptus has been developed by Weyerhaeuser to offer a sustainable tropical hardwood replacement with a guaranteed supply. Grown on managed plantations in Brazil, Lyptus trees can be harvested within 14-16 years, compared to the 60 years it takes a mahogany tree to mature.

The plantations are certified to Brazil’s national sustainable forestry standard, Cerflor, recognised by the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).
