Are you sitting comfortably? Adjustable seating is the key!
Some people are perfectly comfortable sitting on an orange crate or
a simple stool. But for your professional work, you need effective
tools – and one of the most important basics is a good office chair.
However, a good chair isn’t much use if it isn’t adjusted properly
to suit your height, weight, work posture and your personal idea of
comfort.
If you use a car, you pay attention to whether the seat is
comfortable, and make sure you fine-tune it to the ideal position
for your leg length, back and driving posture. But in the office,
this is often overlooked, even though people spend far longer there
each day than in their cars. In fact, Sedus surveys show that some
office workers never check the settings of their swivel chairs at
all.
Partly to address this, Sedus develops office chairs with ergonomic
seats and backrests, which are designed to respond dynamically to
the sitter’s movements. This built-in mobility allows different
postures to be supported automatically. This helps to keep your
muscles moving, improves circulation, and ensures your discs get all
the nutrients they need.
However, even these highly recommended office chairs need to be
adjusted properly so that they provide optimum support for your
body. Sedus has designed its chairs to be easy-to-use, accessible
and durable.
Finding your ideal postureUse the full seat area
In other words, make sure you sit right back against the backrest.
When you do so, there should be 2-3 inches between the front,
rounded edge of the seat and the backs of your knees. This will
allow your lower legs to move freely.
Whether you are generously built or very slight, it’s vital for the
moulded seat to fit your body properly. That’s why Sedus lets you
adjust its chair seats to suit different sizes, or choose between
several different-size seat models.
Have you adjusted the seat height correctly?
The distance between the seat and the floor should correspond to the
length of your lower leg. A vertically well-sprung seat absorbs your
weight, even when the seat is in its lowest position. This can help
prevent possible jolts to your spine — when you sit down too
abruptly, for instance.
If you work in a sitting position, the height of your work surface
is also very important. It should be adjusted so that your lower
arms are bent at an angle of 90°.
Armrests help to relax your shoulders
Armrests should be adjustable in three dimensions. When you are
working at your PC, the height, the distance from the sides of your
body and the fore-aft position should be adjusted so that your lower
arms are at a right angle to your upper arms and you can use your
keyboard without bending your wrists.
A properly adjusted backrest protects your vertebral disks
By leaning squarely against the backrest, you avoid rounded
shoulders and prevent harmful pressure on your discs. A backrest
that dynamically follows the movements of your spine, both
horizontally and vertically, is also good for your back. Sedus
chairs are designed with this principle in mind. A helical tension
spring in the seat mechanism uses the expansion principle to support
your upper body. This ensures that when you lean back, you do not
feel in danger of falling backwards. You can adjust the lean
pressure to suit your own personal preferences.
If your chair has an adjustable lumbar support, align the bulge on
the backrest with the height of your third and fourth lumbar
ver-tebrae (at the top of your pelvis). This will support the
S-shape of your spine, especially when you are working at a
keyboard.
The headrest eases the strain on your neck muscles
The headrest should therefore be height-adjustable, and easy to
reposition forwards without the need to stand up. The forward
setting is useful for when you are reclining, yet need to bend your
head forward to read your computer screen. With the new type of
office chair, which can be reclined so far back that you can almost
lie down, a headrest to support your neck is almost indispensable.
Are you looking for a new office chair?
Adjustable features are not the only considerations when you’re
looking for the perfect office chair to suit your personal
requirements. You also need to consider the swivel mechanism, the
castors, the cover fabric, and other matters such as delivery,
guarantee, repair service, environmental impact and — last, but not
least — the price. Make sure you obtain detailed advice from
well-trained specialists in office furniture, and above all, try the
seat out thoroughly before you buy.
