Air Diffusion helps provide an ideal leisure environment for London’s 02 Complex

An air displacement system for the cinema complex is the latest addition to a whole range of Air Diffusion products serving one of London's most iconic buildings.

The 02 is the rebirth of the Dome. The huge space - an area twice the size of Trafalgar Square - beneath the famous white marquee has been completely re-equipped to create a £600 million entertainment complex.

The O2’s 23,000 seat Arena with its superb acoustics and completely unrestricted views has already provided a venue for a host of stars including Prince and The Rolling Stones. Music, however, is just one of its purposes. The Arena will also be used for sports events including Ice Hockey and it's already booked to host the Gymnasium and Basketball events in the 2012 Olympic Games. Nor is the Arena the only attraction at The O2. The Waterfront complex also includes a music club, a multiplex cinema, bars and over 20 bars and restaurants. There's even a summertime indoor "beach" which doubles as an ice rink in the winter. There’s a dedicated exhibition space, which was recently the venue for a special display of treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Ideal application
The 11-screen cinema can provide seating for nearly 800 movie fans. With a combination of high ceilings and high levels of occupants, cinemas are ideal applications for displacement air systems, which features large air volumes at low velocity and achieves low noise levels. At O2 conditioned air is supplied via ductwork connections to Air Diffusion SD-6/F1 Displacement Ventilation units, which supply air into the auditoria from below the screens.

A special black finish makes the Air Diffusion units almost invisible in the low light conditions of the cinema. To ensure that the impact of the clean airflow is equally discreet, velocities are low - below 0.36m/s at 0.8 metres from the diffuser face. Full comfort is achieved for all patrons, including those in the front row. Warm, stale air is extracted from the auditoria via Air Diffusion Model ECG Eggcrate grilles mounted at high level at the rear.

Ventilation and air conditioning system
Elsewhere in the O2 complex, contractors E and S Heating and Ventilation Ltd have integrated Grilles and Diffusers from Air Diffusion together with Fire and Smoke Control equipment from Actionair, within miles of ductwork to create a new ventilation and air conditioning system. Apart from the six original large air handling units, the entire ventilation and air conditioning system has been replaced.

Air Diffusion has supplied a variety of air terminal devices to the refit project. Perimeter supply in many areas is via 4-Slot Linear Diffusers. This popular range is particularly well suited to large open areas, where the air distribution system must react to varying occupancy levels and be adaptable to future needs. Air Diffusion Slot Diffusers combine sleek good looks with a high air change rate and excellent air pattern and volume control. Other areas are served by Air Diffusion Square Faced and Circular Diffusers. Type SA Diffusers are suitable for both supply and return air applications with the square-faced inner core providing a fixed horizontal air pattern capable of handling a large quantity of air at a given pressure drop and noise level.

Air Diffusion Circular Diffusers are also suitable for the large open areas that abound at the O2. Model DE has a versatile inner cone arrangement, which makes it possible to adjust the airflow pattern in up to five different settings. A large number of Air Diffusion PSG Steel Extract Grilles have also been supplied to the project.
