Carillion’s innovative Eco Depot wins fifth award
Support
services and construction company Carillion has won another award
for its innovative Eco Depot for clients York Council.
The York Design Award will be the fifth accolade that the York Eco
depot has won since it was first built.
The eco-building - which is the centre piece of a brand new £8m
development for the City of York Council - is helping to put
Carillion firmly on the national sustainability map and the recent
award is further evidence of this.
The whole depot is a national exemplar of sustainable construction
with real time monitoring of its performance and is used to manage
the Council’s housing, waste and roads needs.
Locally grown bale was used to provide insulation which is three
times more efficient than building regulations advise.
The bale is encased in a timber surround and reinforced with steel
mesh prior to three coats of lime render being applied to each face,
producing a standard panel of 2.9m high, 2.1m wide and 0.5m thick
weighing 1.5tonnes each.
The design includes a wind turbine and solar panels to generate
energy for the site as well as a rainwater collection system so rain
water can be recycled and used to wash depot vehicles rather than
using clean tap water.
Previously, council vehicles were washed at the depot using tap
water costing a total of £25,000 a year.
The new system is expected to reduce water consumption by 50 per
cent.
Other eco features include solar thermal panels which have been
erected on ancillary buildings which are sufficient to suit the site
needs for hot water.
Senior contracts manager Brian Dunn said: “It has been great for
Carillion to have been part of such a ground-breaking project which
has now won so many awards. Helping businesses to embrace
sustainable solutions is one of Carillion’s key strengths.
“The project has been a real success given the close co operation
and support offered by not only the Carillion design team, the
Carillion civil engineering and building staff but also the City of
York management team and their consultants.”
And Carillion’s sustainable solutions have recently been recognised
nationally. Carillion recently secured first place in the category
for large and medium sized companies with high environmental impact
and second place overall in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies
Award published recently.
Carillion has also been named as a gold award winner and
construction sector leader in Business in the Community’s Companies
that Count index. Alfred McAlpine was also named as a gold award
winner and support services sector leader in the same index, which
features the top 100 companies in the UK for corporate
responsibility.
