DORMA products in demand for Scottish schools modernisation

DORMA door controls have been specified on nineteen school refurbishment projects in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, boasting the biggest education Public Private Partnership, with £319m being invested in the modernisation of secondary schools.
DORMA’s unrivalled range of door closer and panic hardware solutions and years of experience working with education establishments, has led to their expertise being much in demand in this sector.
Providing safe access and egress systems for educational establishments is a demanding and responsible business, particularly when taking into account the many issues surrounding security, health & safety – and of course compliance with parts 3 and 4 of SENDA (Special Education Needs and Disability Act). Specifications for the type of high profile, high value, PPP project taking place across Scotland need to be taken extremely responsibly. Safe and reliable access both into, within and from the building, needs to be ensured, especially in areas which is going to be particularly busy.
Calderside Academy at Blantyre, which has 1300 pupils and has been occupied by pupils since January 2008, has utilised a wide range of access and egress solutions. The Academy is a mixture of new one, two and three-storey buildings with six classroom wings; including a designated Special Education Needs classroom, along with administration, dining, kitchen, assembly, library facilities, and extensive sports facilities.

To meet the necessary security, health & safety standards at Calderside Academy, DORMA worked in partnership with the specialist ironmongery division of Build Center in Glasgow, supplying and installing a mix of cam-action closers, panic bars and floor springs.

DORMA can-action closers, fitted at all strategic points throughout the school, feature a unique linear drive mechanism and heart-shaped cam. The effect of this, particularly with compliance of BS8300 the DDA in mind, is that when the door is opened the opening force falls away rapidly after the first few degrees to below 30N, resulting in very little resistance throughout the opening cycle. The door is easy to open and much safer for children, those carrying books and equipment and for people with physical disabilities. The unit also features a slide channel design, which is less susceptible to vandalism and abuse
The specific cam-action products fitted are the TS92, the TS93 which has a delayed action feature as standard, and the TS97 – the smallest surface-mounted cam-action door closer available on the market.
As always with a school environment safe egress in an emergency has to be balanced with security against unwanted entry, and the product range always in demand for this type of situation is the AD4000 series of full door-width touchbars. The units incorporate stainless steel deadlocking Pullman type latches, require the minimum of effort to open and are available in a range of architectural metal finishes. Specifically it is the AD4100 version with solenoid operation fitted at Calderside, which has a panic bolt concealed in the lock stile of the door, a feature that helps prevent vandalism.

Another DORMA product installed throughout the school is the BTS 75 V floor spring. It is an extremely efficient mechanism designed for doors up to 1100mm width and offers single or double action. Features include an optional mechanical hold-open, adjustable closing force, fixed backcheck and it is CERTIFIRE approved for fire doors CF127 ITT60/MM/IMM240.
