 Heating
is often applied to an enclosure or room within which the materials
to be stored are housed, in an attempt toeither try to warm the
sensitive surfaces to avoid condensation, or alternatively to
try to adjust the relative humidity of the air to avoid corrosion
that can occur onferrous and other sensitive metals (rusty steel,
oxidised aluminium, tarnished silver, brass etc)..
Calculations indicate, and experience shows, that to dehumidify an
area costs around 20%of that required to heat it to equivalent
humidity levels.
However, in many cases, heating not only does little to deal with
the problem, it can often make it worse, by allowing high take-up of
water into warmer air.
Large thermal masses such as steel ingots, billets and coils take a
long time to adjust temperature, and so will not track any
variations in ambient humidity, and it is the effect of the moisture
content at the surface of the material that will determine if
corrosion an occur.
Corrosion rates dramatically escalate above about 50%RH and
pollutants in the atmosphere combine with the humidity to increase
he ate of corrosion.
Using the Munters dehumidifiers and controlling the humidity level
to 45%RH or below, regardless of the air temperature, you are able
to avoid the use of previous protective packaging for the
steel in tore.
