OVENTROP VALVES CHOSEN FOR FLAGSHIP BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

Oventrop valves have been used throughout The University of Manchester’s new flagship building known as University Place. The new construction is part of a £650m capital programme at Manchester, one of the largest universities in Europe. M&E Framework Consultant for this project is R W Gregory LLP, Manchester.

SES, the mechanical and electrical services contractors for the project chose Oventrop valves for their competitive cost and fitness for purpose. As well as valves for heating and cooling, an extensive range of hydronic balancing valves were used to serve three blocks and an energy centre. To prevent the risk of Legionnella, Oventrop Aquastrom T Plus multi-function secondary circulation regulating valves have been used on domestic hot water returns.

A number of academic and ancillary functions are housed within University Place including Student Services, Catering, the School of Nursing and the Institute of Health Sciences as well as a block of new student accommodation towards the rear.

As well as 1200 thermostatic radiator valve/lockshield sets supplied by Oventrop, the energy centre employs the company’s valves on both water and gas services. Throughout University Place extensive use has been made of commissioning sets, differential pressure regulators, strainers, butterfly and ball isolation valves, all of Oventrop supply.

The Aquastrom T Plus multi-function valves were chosen for their ability to pasteurise the system, simplify the commissioning stage and provide significant energy savings by thermostatically controlling temperature and flow in the system. They are factory set at 57ºCand operate as a temperature control valves on the DHW return. Once the system reaches temperature, the valve throttles down to a residual minimum flow to limit the amount of heat loss in the system and reduce the energy/cost required to raise the return water back up to temperature. As soon as the water in the return pipe cools to below the preset temperature, the valve responds by allowing more flow – thus eliminating cold dead legs and the risk of Legionnella.

The valve also provides a hydronic balance of the DHW system and enables automatic system pasteurisation when the HWS generator or stored water temperature is raised above 70ºC.
