PMT win role to convert a listed office block into a luxury
hotel
 Leading architect and historic building consultant, Purcell Miller
Tritton, the team responsible for the iconic St George’s Hall
restoration in Liverpool, have won yet another prestigious project
in the European City of Culture. They have been appointed by
developers Kingsgate London Properties Ltd to take forward the
conversion of a Grade II* listed office block into a £17m boutique
hotel and spa project throughout 2008.
Situated in Liverpool’s city centre, the new 90 bed hotel and spa
will be based in the former Royal Insurance Building. Extensive
refurbishment and conservation work will be carried out to restore
the seven storey Edwardian structure that has remained empty and in
a poor state of repair for over 15 years. It is in such a
dilapidated state that it features on the English Heritage Buildings
at-Risk Register.
The proposed conversion will include the provision of a health spa
in the basement area of the building, making use of the existing
attractive brick vaulted spaces. The ground floor will contain a
restaurant and bar, together with a suite of meeting rooms, while
the upper floors will make way for around 90 bedrooms. Other works
include creating a contemporary addition to the uppermost floors of
the building that will incorporate extra bedroom accommodation,
complete with panoramic views of the city’s skyline.
