Roto’s entry to the UK roof window and solar systems sectors of the roofing market

Though signs for growth in new build housing remain poor, the decision by Roto to launch its roof window and solar system ranges in the UK might be considered overdue from a company of such European prominence. Both product sectors have benefited from above average growth in recent years, and as UK construction finally gets to grips with sustainability, materials which contribute tangibly to thermal efficiency are already reaping the rewards. Indications are that the rate of growth for roof windows may slow this year, but in light of the way that they are fundamentally affecting interior design, such a suggestion may yet prove premature.

Products such as the unique 7-Series roof window illustrate the extent of change affecting the roof window. It provides all the benefits of traditional centre-pivot operation but with the addition of a high swing axis. The patented design provides a pivot point in the top third of the frame so, when open, it neither blocks the field of vision nor protrudes into the room. Outer panes of all 7-series windows can therefore be cleaned from inside the room in just the same way as a centre pivot, but with none of the attendant inconvenience. Available in either PVC or pine, outer cladding is also available to suit any style of roof covering, including bespoke RAL shades to special order. U-values start from a typical 1.5m2/K.

The development of solar energy systems has given designers scope to use roofs for their contribution to a building’s sustainability and thermal efficiency. Such products have, however, invariably failed to address demands for contemporary styling, and in many cases are highly unsightly. Roto’s Sunroof system sits low against the roofline and works on a ‘building block’ system, the modular and uniform nature of the photovoltaic and solar elements lending a unique style and distinctiveness. In the same way that roof windows used in variety of combinations create their own point of focus in addition to internal light, atmosphere and style, so the uniform size and appearance of grouped Sunroof panels gives them an intrinsic visual appeal. Used either singly or in combination, they can provide hot water, auxiliary heating and even generate electricity. Fitting is easy and inexpensive, using flashings which can be removed simply for maintenance or inspection. A solar system of less than 4.5m2 can provide the hot water needs of a family home, and presents little which might be sensitive to a planner. UK Sales manager Adrian Fishley commented “We hope the combination of roof window and solar system technology will enable Roto to bring significant technical and environmental value to the roofing market. The company has developed products which are not just energy efficient, but look good. The combined offering will hopefully prove convenient for merchants too, both in terms of buying and obtaining specialist advice”.

In terms of distribution, Roto has an established 25,000 sq ft warehousing and office facility in Rugby serving its existing window and door hardware business. With over 60 years experience of window hardware, it can point to the fact that over half of the world's tilt and turn installations use its systems. If nothing else, this provides tangible proof of the resources available for product development.

With increasing energy costs and the need for new homes to be carbon neutral by 2016, the contribution of such products to a building’s star rating for energy efficiency will doubtless guarantee that the profile of manufacturers remains high. The recent publication by the Government of its Code for Sustainable Homes, which includes a green star rating for properties, will surely provoke even more interest.
