Mastic Asphalt puts chill on global warming
 The
Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) has unveiled a revolutionary low-melt
mastic asphalt that cuts working temperatures by up to 13% and will
result in significant energy savings – helping to reduce the world’s
carbon footprint still further. It is another massive step forward
for the industry in its ongoing landmark campaign to tackle the
threat of climate change.
At the centre of this innovative new technology is an advanced
binder – the result of extensive research in Germany and the UK. It
is designed to increase the workability of the mastic asphalt at
lower temperatures, with no loss in performance or durability.
By lowering working temperatures by up to 35°C, the new low-melt
solution requires significantly less energy to apply, delivering a
massive drop in carbon emissions. This means the mastic asphalt
industry is cutting even more carbon at source, with less needed to
be offset.
It follows MAC’s ground breaking feat of cutting its entire carbon
footprint to achieve CarbonZero status, a first for an entire
industry. The development of low-melt asphalt continues that
process, by all MAC manufacturing members.
A new material has already been put through its paces by Guaranteed
Asphalt on its Ayr Retail Development contract in Scotland. With
1500 square metres of roofing to be covered, the new material
comfortably demonstrated its eco-credentials and ease of use,
despite damp to wet conditions and low air temperatures.
It is a huge boost for building owners, main contractors and
specifiers seeking the ultimate in waterproofing integrity, safe in
the knowledge they are not contributing to the threat of global
warming.
Again, while the rest of UK industry is talking about going green,
the mastic asphalt industry continues to forge the path for others
to follow.
