CMS delivers geotechnical solutions for Tesco distribution
centre
Geotechnical
specialist, CMS, has specified and supplied its Slope-Guard Type 5
and Bentofix NSP 4900, erosion control and clay lining materials,
for two rainwater collection lagoons serving the new £65 million
Tesco regional distribution centre near Goole. Constructed by
O’Boyle Civil Engineering, the lagoons will collect excess rainwater
evacuated from the distribution centre roof.
As the 850,000 square foot depot is built in an ecologically
protected area, water evacuation had to be managed using
environmentally friendly methods. Two large man-made lagoons were
excavated, using a total of 30,000m2 of Bentofix NSP 4900 to line
the bottom. Bentofix NSP 4900 is a geosynthetic clay liner that
provides a high performance alternative to compacted clay and soil
hydraulic barriers in water containment and environmental protection
applications.
To facilitate efficient water flow into the lagoons, the sides were
built on a medium incline. To protect these slopes from erosion,
30,000m2 of Slope-Guard Type 5 was installed on all elevations.
Slope-Guard Type 5 is biodegradable erosion control matting,
manufactured from coir matting and straw mixed blanket. It prevents
soil loss and slope instability while providing an excellent
microclimate for grass seeds to germinate.
Chris O’Boyle, managing director, O’Boyle Civil Engineering,
comments: “CMS Limited were able to provide the complete solution
for our geotechnical requirements. The materials were quick and easy
to install, competitively priced, and most importantly – on-site
exactly when we needed them. This was backed up by technical
support, which was only a phone call away if we needed it.”
The geotechnical materials supplied by CMS provided a cost effective
solution to ensure the lagoons remained an environmentally sound
method of water control over time. The construction of Bentofix NSP
4900 delivers superior performance to standard clay lining products,
making it ideal for large-scale applications. It consists of a layer
of sodium bentonite held between two geotextile layers, mechanically
bonded together using a patented needle punching process. The
natural sodium bentonite in the material responds to hydration and
constriction to form an impermeable layer with virtually unlimited
life.
Richard Longbottom, technical director, CMS, concludes: “As the UK’s
largest provider of geotechnical solutions to the construction and
infrastructure markets, we offer the widest choice of products from
a single source. The Tesco project benefited from this as we were
able to advise on the most cost effective and high performing
materials to meet the specification.”
