PROTECTING THERMAL PERFORMANCE
 A
new strategy to help specifiers and roofers achieve a 20%
improvement in thermal performance targets, whilst still limiting
risk of harmful condensation build-up in the roof, has been
developed by Glidevale.
The concept utilises changes to acceptable construction techniques
and advances in technology. Under BS5250:2002 Amendment 1 2005,
inclusion of a low resistance (LR) vapour permeable roof underlay
WITH a well-sealed ceiling AND a separate vapour control layer on
the warm side of the insulation eliminates the need to include
roofspace ventilation.
Glidevale’s strategy focuses on the incorporation of its Protect
VP400 high performance vapour permeable roof underlay, and Protect
VC Foil reflective low emissivity vapour control layer in place of a
conventional VCL. Protect VC Foil’s insulating properties can reduce
conventional insulation requirements by over 15%, and has also shown
thermal performance improvements to 0.16W/m2K- in conjunction with
suitable insulation- a figure already being projected as the target
under future changes to Regulations. Depending on the detailing, the
system can also reduce thermal bridging through the rafters.
Matthew McAndy, Glidevale Technical manager, elaborates, “Our
research indicates changes in Building Regulations could soon
require a warm roof to achieve a U value as low as 0.16W/m2K.
Regardless of whether that is a legislative demand yet, there is
still a strong argument benefits to the construction through
improved thermal performance, design flexibility and reduced costs,
but more importantly it will become a vital part of energy efficient
building, itself a major contributor to the UK’s commitment to
combat climate change.”
Protect VP400 is one of the only underlays of its type that is
certified for use without restriction for wind uplift. The Type LR
membrane is proven to avoid generation of nuisance noise under wind
loading.
Highly vapour permeable but entirely watertight, it ensures any
moisture build-up in the roof is efficiently transferred through the
roof covering above, eliminating the need for additional ventilation
in the roof in a warm roof configuration. Protect VP400
simultaneously acts as a secondary line of defence against any
wind-driven rain or snow that might penetrate through fortuitous
gaps between the slates or tiles. Its UV resistance and
watertightness allows its use as a temporary roof covering for up to
three months.
Protect VC Foil highly reflective low emissivity vapour control
layer can provide up to 500% reduction in heat flow through floors,
200% in roofs and ceilings and 270% in walls. It provides improved
thermal performance over conventional vapour control layers, and has
the added benefit of providing a service cavity.
Both form an integral element of the Glidevale Protect range of
membranes, which includes Protect A1- the first real alternative to
traditional 1F felt, Protect TF200 breather membrane for timber
frame walls, and Protect TF200 Thermo which claims a 270%
improvement in a timber frame wall’s thermal performance over
standard vapour permeable membranes.
